Journal Writing Prompt: Truth

by: dee Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

“I love you, and because I love you, I would sooner have you hate me for telling you the truth than adore me for telling you lies.”

~Pietro Aretino

When you truly love someone, you also have a deep respect for that person. And, while sometimes it may be easier to lie to someone, to “protect their feelings”, there is also the fact that it’s better to tell them the truth than lie – if for no other reason than the chance (even the outside chance) that truth may be revealed leater, and cause more hurt than the original truth would have, if it would have been given to begin with.

However, it can still be so difficult. A struggle between loving & wanting the love returned, and taking the higher path of the right thing. In your life, have you experienced a time when you chose to tell the truth – even though you knew that it would be difficult and painful – rather than taking the easy road of lying? Write about that situation in your journal. How did it turn out? Was the truth (after it was revealed) really as bad as your mind thought it was to begin with? How did that time effect your life later on?

Journal Writing Prompt Bonus: Let’s look at the “flip side” of this. Have you had a time in your life when you told a lie to “protect” the one you love and, despite your effort, the truth was revealed? What was the situation? What happened as a result? Looking back, do you think it would have been better to tell the truth to begin with? If not, why not?

Happy Journaling!
