Journal Writing Prompt: Dedication

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“The person who makes a success of living is the one who see his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.”

~Cecil B. DeMille

What are your goals, your dreams? Are you seeing them and aiming for them, without getting distracted by little things on the way? Are you dedicated to achieving your dreams? In your journal, answer these questions. If you find yourself getting distracted, take a few moments to reflect on why you are allowing distractions.

Journal Writing Prompt: Light

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark. The real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.

- Plato

There were a number of ancient Philosophers who focused on seeking “the good, the true, and the light”. And, I believe that in this context, Plato is looking at the “light” with that view. In your journal, consider this quote – do you believe that it is a real tragedy when someone lives their life in fear of that “light”?

Journal Writing Prompt Bonus: In your journal, give further thought to today’s quote. Would you consider yourself someone who is afraid of the light? Or, are you someone who actively pursues the light – looking for it, seeking it, always keeping it in your line of sight? Or, are you someone who falls somewhere in between? No matter what your answer, delve a little deeper and answer the question: Why am I this way?

Journal Writing Prompt: Persistence

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

Calvin Coolidge

We’ve all heard the phrase “persistence pays off”. Former President Coolidge adds to this by saying that persistence and determination are really the deciding factors in whether you accomplish what you set out to do or if you fail. In your journal, contemplate whether you agree with this statement. Does persistence and determination alone make all the difference? Or, is there something more that comes into play?

Journal Writing Prompt Bonus: Think about a time in your life when you succeeded due to your own persistence and determination. What made you so persistent? What was it about the situation that gave you the resolve and determination to succeed, no matter what obstacle was thrown in your path? Write about that in your journal. Then, consider a time when you were determined, but, you still failed at the task you set out to do. What was the difference between the two situations?

Journal Writing Prompt: Truth

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.”

~ Winston Churchill

There are two emerging sides to the truth, it seems. One side says that truth is absolute – no matter what, it is always the same – this appears to be the side of the argument that Winston Churchill falls on.

The other side says truth is fluid – depending on the situation, the truth changes. Read More→

Journal Writing Prompt: Focus

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“When you write down your ideas you automatically focus your full attention on them. Few if any of us can write one thought and think another at the same time. Thus a pencil and paper make excellent concentration tools.”

~Michael Leboeuf

One of the reasons I am such an advocate for everyone keeping a journal, is just what Michael Leboeuf says in today’s quote. When you write something on paper, you are focusing on that thought, that instant. It’s a great way to not only relieve your brain of the constant pressure to do more, think more, and multi-task constantly, but, it’s a wonderful way to really focus on the “task at hand” – that is, the thought or the situation you need to focus on right then.

Journal Writing Prompt: Inspiration

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“The hero draws inspiration from the virtue of his ancestors.”
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I’ve found that my inspiration comes from many different sources. Sometimes, I may find myself walking and come across a color combination or unexpected item that inspires me beyond belief. Other times, my inspiration may come from the actions of those around me or a knowledge of the past. And, still other times, inspiration comes to me when I least expect it.

Journal Writing Prompt: Perseverance

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.”

~Marie Curie

Do you feel you have a persevering character, even in the light of life difficulties? In your journal, write about the struggles you are currently facing in this light…Are you letting them hold you back and get you down? Or are they a “challenge” to you, bringing out that persevering character that will keep moving towards your goal, no matter what life throws your way?

Journal Writing Prompt: Future

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“Take time to gather up the past so that you will be able to draw from your experience and invest them in the future.”

~Jim Rohn

One of the great uses of writing in your journal daily is to, as Jim Rohn says, “gather up your past” so that you will be able to learn & draw from those experiences for the future.

In your journal, write about your week this week. Think of your successes and failures. What has your week been like? What can you learn from this past week that you can use in the future?

Journal writing prompt bonus: Sometimes, the smallest experiences – ones that we don’t even think about at the time – can produce a great deal of knowledge from the experience. Think back over your week again. Was there some little thing that happened that keeps floating around in the back of your head? Something that seemed small and silly, but, the memory just doesn’t want to leave you alone? Write about that in your journal. Even if you aren’t sure what you learned from the experience, make sure to write it down in your journal to reflect on later.

Journal Writing Prompt: Discipline

Posted by: dee | Comments (0)

“Self-discipline is an act of cultivation. It require you to connect today’s actions to tomorrow’s results. There’s a season for sowing and a season for reaping. Self-discipline helps you know which is which.”

~Gary Ryan Blair

Self Discipline is an interesting thing, really. Sometimes, we can be very self-disciplined in some areas of our lives, but, have absolutely no self discipline in other areas of our life. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your own self-discipline level overall? Write about it in your journal. Make sure to include the areas in your life that you are most disciplined and the areas in which you are least disciplined.
